True friendship

more-in

Exactly one year ago, on March 11, 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami hit Japan, causing the loss of a huge number of lives and numerous missing people in the affected areas. Very painful memories and feelings of deep sorrow still remain within the people of Japan. While I express my sincerest condolences for the victims on this special day, we, the Government and the people of Japan, would once again like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Government and people of India for their sincere, kind and warm expressions of sympathy and support offered to us at the time of unprecedented difficulties.

We are particularly most thankful for the dispatch of a 46-member team of the National Disaster Management Authority to assist relief efforts in the tsunami-ravaged regions, and for the supplies of many relief materials, as well as huge cash donations sent by the people of India for the disaster-affected people of Japan. The Japanese people will never forget these gestures of true friendship demonstrated by the Government and people of India. With the encouragement and solidarity extended by India and the rest of the international community, Japan has been making a steady recovery and reconstruction. Japan will gratefully recompense the favour of the priceless gift of their friendship, as much as possible, through ODA and other means. In this milestone year which marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and India, we renew our commitment to expand the strategic and global partnership between our two countries and look forward to a new chapter of our friendship and cooperation.

Akitaka Saiki,

Ambassador of Japan to India
