Time’s comment

The Congress has raised a lot of hue and cry over the Time magazine’s description of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as an “underachiever.” It is a fact that ever since Dr. Singh has taken over as PM, no major decisions have been taken. His government is non-functional. That the magazine published a story on Atal Bihari Vajapyee titled “Asleep at the wheel” in 2002 can hardly be a defence for Dr. Singh. Under the latter’s leadership, inflation has galloped, the rupee has been devalued, the prices of petroleum products and essential commodities have increased manifold, and incidents of terror have gone up. Time is not entirely wrong.

One swallow does not make a summer. The criticism of the Prime Minister is a piece of tactful media reporting. We have seen such reporting at the time of the fall of Iran and other times too. Judging a person in such a short period and expecting him to perform a miracle on the economic front is unfair.
