The Modi victory

This refers to the article, “ >Those who forget and those who can’t” (May 20). Mr. Modi now shoulders the expectations of millions while facing reactions to his stupendous victory that verge from shock to surprise, and then denial and anger. There are even some who say that the mandate does not represent 61 per cent of the electorate. There are open letters and doses of advice to him. I would request such writers to take a step back and let the new government take shape. If Mr. Modi falters, please criticise him.

Certain events like the demolition of the Babri Masjid and the Gujarat pogrom can never be erased from the minds of those affected. Mr. Modi won 2014 largely on account of the dissatisfaction with the UPA and the Congress. The second point is that he sold the Gujarat model backed by his track record of development and administration. Now that he will head the government, he must reintegrate the alienated sections of society and dispel their sense of insecurity.
