Telecom case

Former Telecom Minister Sukhram has been awarded five years imprisonment by a Delhi court after being convicted of taking Rs.3 lakh as bribe to give a lucrative contract to a private firm in 1996. If this case is viewed so seriously, can one expect the same diligence being applied to the mega 2G cases too? Punishment must be such that the political class thinks twice before indulging in wrongdoing.

The fact that it has taken so long to convict Sukhram only shows that our judicial system is slow. Perhaps, this is one reason why people are losing faith in the system. Prolonged investigations and cumbersome procedures in issuing a chargesheet are part of the process. It is also a fact that the accused, even while in jail, enjoy special privileges. We must learn from the U.S. where the system works fast and spares no one.
