The statistics provided by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) that as many as 1,35,445 persons committed suicide in the country in 2012 is shocking (June 26). That social and economic factors are the major cause reflect the state of society. Lopsided growth, ever widening income inequality and mad competition fuel desperation. In the neo-liberal era, “success” is the single mantra uttered. No one thinks of emotional stability to sustain setbacks and the spirit to fight back, all of which are found wanting in the new generation. All this demands a proactive role by the media, progressive sections of society and government agencies to impart in all of us a positive outlook on life.
