India is not a signatory to the NPT due to its discriminatory nature (“Strategic networking in the Indo-Pacific,” Sept. 12) Yet, many countries have come to recognise our country’s credible nuclear policy. Australia’s dramatic shift in stance, from criticism to acceptance, is one example. These kinds of developments will ensure better nuclear facilities and a regular supply of nuclear fuel. As far as the Look East policy is concerned, major economies such as Japan and China are now evincing interest in infrastructure projects here. India can make gains by developing industrial parks, running fast trains and building smart cities with financial and technical support from these countries. With bilateral talks and ASEAN cooperation, India can address the issue of balanced foreign trade to reduce its current account deficit. With the western economies marred by financial crises, the role of BRICS and the Look East policy acquire special significance for India.
