State of the economy

It is disheartening that intolerance is on the rise especially when there is criticism directed at the central government and its policies (“‘Manmohan allowed graft, Abhijit’s ideas rejected’,” October 19). It is odd that a senior Union Minister should attack the former Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, who had saved India when the economy was in decline. Separately, the personal remarks made against Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee were in bad taste. Those at the helm of affairs need to take criticism in their stride.

It is difficult to accept the statement of the Dr. Abhijit Banerjee that the Indian economy is in a tailspin. India is a large consumption economy and there is sure to be a way out. The biggest problem is a combination of wasteful freebies, subsidies and concessions that are only encouraging an idle life. Putting money in the hands of the poor, as he suggests, would make the situation worse. The government needs to scrap wasteful freebies and subsidies and encourage work.
