Sri Lanka election

more-in

It cannot escape notice that what has driven the majority voters in Sri Lanka to vote for Gotabaya Rajapaksa is the fear instilled in their minds by the blasts earlier this year, which killed more than 250 people (Front page, ‘Gotabaya wins in presidential poll,” Nov. 19). The security of the country appears to have been the paramount consideration, and the voters have backed a person known for his strong but reportedly controversial ways of putting down acts of terror.

The return of Rajapaksas, with Gotabaya Rajapaksa winning the presidential election with a substantial margin, is certainly bad news for the Tamils living in Sri Lanka. Albeit a hero among the Sinhalese for ending the civil war, Mr. Gotabaya is viewed by Tamils as a person who was responsible for their agony during. The person who is suspected to be behind the infamous ‘white wan’ kidnappings is very unlikely to bring the missing ones back. It is sad that a once-prosperous community is now reeling under poverty and its voice is often shunned by the majority.
