Endurance, perseverance, dedication and determination have all been Sachin Tendulkar's forte. He is a great example of how one, by untiring efforts and by being focussed, can accomplish the task at hand. We all stand up and salute you, Great Master!

It is indeed a great occasion, but at what cost? There is no doubt that he is a great batsman. But, of late, he has lost his form and is struggling to make runs. Why this craving for personal records, when the prestige of the country is at stake? The most appalling aspect on March 16 was that nobody bothered about the drubbing India received at the hands of Bangladesh. Everybody was ecstatic about the century.

Many congratulations to the Little Master on scaling cricket's Mount Everest (March 17). The day Sachin hit his first international test 100 against England at Old Trafford in August 1990, I made an instant desire to drop a one rupee coin in my hundi every time he hit a century. For long, the hundi had only 99 coins. On March 16, I proudly dropped a special one-rupee coin. I do wish I have the opportunity to present the 100 coins to the little big man.

The article “Tendulkar — poetry in motion” (“Sport,” March 17) was wonderful. I would like to share my experience. In 2002, a colleague's son, who is spastic, expressed his desire to meet Sachin and the request was passed on to me. I was able to fix an appointment with the great man when he was in Chennai for a camp. When I was approaching the Chepauk Stadium, I was shocked to see the bus with the players driving past. I was upset that the boy would be distressed. However, when I went to the stadium to console him, I was stunned to find Sachin there. He had told the team manager that he would return as he had an appointment with the boy. For a man of his name and fame, it was moving to see him do this.
