Today, several countries across the globe and Europe in particular face a tricky situation with young and educated Muslims among their population gravitating towards fundamentalism. That the growing menace of terrorism emanates from groups such as Islamic State should not be glossed over by the international community, considering its discernible and potential fallout on international peace, stability and development.

It is odd that the publishers of Charlie Hebdo were going ahead with an editorial plan despite knowing that it was fraught with danger. It is ironic that the media, both print and electronic, often wantonly walk into the danger zone by hurting the sentiments of a community either to increase sales or TRP ratings. When there are plenty of other subjects to be discussed, why invite trouble?

The motive behind the attack in which 12 people were mercilessly gunned down is no less shocking than this incident which reveals the heightened level of religious intolerance among the people of certain communities. The acts of violence around the world show that religion has begun to turn into a breeding ground to perpetrate gruesome violence. On the one hand, people want to try to save “saints and seers” who bear criminal charges. On the other hand, gun-toting fanatics are willing to engineer bloodshed on even the slightest provocation. The incident in Paris is a clarion call for saner heads in all nations to debate the issue and provide wise counsel.

The Paris killings should come as a metaphorical slap in the face of those in the media who have tried to equate Hindu resurgence with Islamic terror. While the media in India were busy wringing hands over the largely peaceful protests over the film PK , here is a truly horrific act. Which one of the media outlets in India will stand in solidarity with the cartoonists who lost their lives?
