Shoot and help

Karan Singh Tyagi’s article “To shoot, or to help?” (July 19) reminded me of the death of Princess Diana when the paparazzi made huge fortunes by shooting photos instead of calling an ambulance. Of what use is the video shot by the journalist in Guwahati? It helped in identifying the criminals who attacked the girl and boosted the popularity of his news channel. If, instead, he had intervened effectively with prompt police help, the outrage could have been prevented. If he needed 20 minutes to film the incident, owing to “professional compulsions,” he and the media have got their values quite wrong.

Matthew Adukanil,

The Guwahati incident has made people across the country sit up and raise a hue and cry, thanks to the media. But are not people aware that a woman is subject to taunts, teasing and groping at some point in her life? These issues have become so common that people associate it with the curse of being a woman. Are we so insensitive that the media has to make a celebration out of such an issue for the wheels of justice to turn?
