Save INS Vikrant

more-in

The report on >INS Vikrant (July 17) and the letters on it (July 18) brought back memories of a painful event. On July 20, 1964, an ‘Alizé,’ one of the fighter aircraft operating from INS Vikrant, crashed. Its crew members, Lt. V.K. Jaykumar, Lt. B.T. Acharya and Lt. S.M. Rajmachikkar, lost their lives. Lt. Jaykumar was my cousin. I was 10 years at the time and the incident was narrated to us by elders in the family. The cause of the accident is still unclear and continues to cause immense pain to the family. Amid the speculation over the fate of Vikrant, why cannot the ship be saved and dedicated to the memory of these three brave naval officers? Can it not be declared a museum/place of learning?
