Salem corridor

The Madras High Court judgment quashing a notification issued last year to acquire land for the ₹10,000 crore Salem-Chennai expressway proves yet again that development is inevitable but not at the cost of the poorest sections. The fact of losing invaluable agricultural land reiterates the need for a more transparent system of referendum in such a land acquisition process. Else such projects will only compound an already severe agrarian crisis.
