RTE Act and learning

February 09, 2016 12:46 am | Updated 12:46 am IST

I recently visited a single-teacher tribal school and was amazed to see the learning levels of the students. They were very bright, inquisitive and disciplined. This was all possible because of one motivated teacher who worked incessantly for the cause of underprivileged students, which shows how an inspired and well-trained teacher can ensure that students learn cognitive skills and important values during their formative years (“Schooling without learning”, Feb.8) Herein lies the importance of training teachers. “A poor teacher tells, an average teacher teaches, a good teacher explains, an excellent teacher demonstrates and a great teacher inspires”, goes a Japanese saying. The biggest battle of the 21st century lies in tackling low education levels and to win it we need special warriors in the form of inspired teachers.

It is a matter for concern that we need a large number of schools that impart quality education and face the dilemma of shutting down schools. Closing schools will not only impact the dropout rate but also hurt female education.
