Now that the dust raised by the elections to five State Assemblies has settled and political parties are engaged in poll arithmetic, it is time to acknowledge the stupendous exercise the election process was. The Election Commission deserves compliments for a job well done. Even Central Ministers could not defy the Commission and get away with it. The large voter turnout in the elections augers well for our democracy as it shows that people are determined to take part in governance, shedding their indifference to the electoral process. This is largely due to the awareness created by the media.

It is a pity that all media channels are linking the post-election scenario to caste and religion. They give secondary importance to performance and governance. How can we expect people to change? It is corruption and exploitation of the poor that drive the electorate into making a u-turn in the elections. It is not caste and religion as the media would have us believe.

Can anyone please tell us what the purpose of exit polls is? The discussions on exit poll results are aired 24x7 on all television news channels. Politicians say the exit polls are right if they point to a win, and ridicule them if they are otherwise. Or simply ask us to wait for the actual results. Then why all this fuss of conducting exit polls and creating a volatile environment?
