The articles on kushti (wrestling) by P. Sainath (Oct. 30 & 31) were interesting. To popularise and economise wrestling, we need to change our thinking. What ruined our hockey was our refusal to change. The sooner we adapt ourselves to mat wrestling, the better we will be placed to bring hidden rural talent to the mainstream.
Governments and defunct associations need to be pressured for subsidised infrastructure. Diet needs re-vitalisation so that our wrestlers can tackle modern wrestlers.
As for training, instead of focussing on heavy moves, we need to have smart, agile wrestlers. I hope, like Mr. Sainath’s reports on farm suicides, his articles on wrestling will also catch the attention of policymakers.
