Narcotic hub

That it is not just youngsters from ‘dysfunctional families’ but also those from ‘perfectly normal families’ who are becoming drug victims “solely for recreational purposes” is alarming (’Ground Zero’ page, ““Ecstacy and the agony”, July 20). This is possibly due to a lack of proper parental monitoring, compounded when one or both parents is/are working abroad as in Kerala. The pocket money being given to middle and upper-class youngsters is way beyond basic requirements.

The statement that Uthamapuram is “notorious for ganja trade but remains out of bounds for enforcement agencies” is baffling. The “Student Police Cadet” scheme must be emulated across India.
