Nothing can be truer than the statement that “the model code may not be perfect but it certainly ain't broke” in the well-reasoned editorial “The model code ain't broke” (Feb. 23). The UPA government's proposal to give a statutory shape to the “executive instructions” of the Election Commission is aimed at blunting the powers of the constitutional body. In fact, with the increase in criminalisation of politics, the Commission should have more enforceable executive powers.

For a democracy to succeed, free and fair elections are an absolute necessity. The EC's swift and effective intervention at the slightest hint of violation of the model code has put the election process on the right track. It has become the pride of our country, and an example to other countries. Any move to dilute the EC's executive powers will be detrimental to democracy.

The Model Code of Conduct is the Magna Carta of Indian elections. It has ensured free and fair elections. Fraudulent practices have declined mainly because of the EC's timely intervention.
Instead of making it weak by giving it a statutory status, let us strengthen it.
