Lack of faith

As a society, we have lost faith in our institutions. No matter how serious a situation, the police do not function in an unbiased manner, and the judiciary does not deliver speedy justice. No wonder, people prefer to flee rather than trust fellow citizens. Had the state ensured justice to the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and the 2002 Gujarat riots, situations like what we see today would not have arisen at all.
