Kudankulam protests

March 06, 2012 01:00 am | Updated 01:00 am IST

While agreeing with the views expressed in the article “Losing the plot” (March 5), I feel the prolonged agitation against the operationalisation of the nuclear power plant in Kudankulam is not just about safety issues. It does look motivated, with external forces supporting it.

Many experts, including Abdul Kalam, have said the plant is safe. The government has ascertained the views of the scientific community. Tamil Nadu is facing acute power shortage. If such obstruction is supported, no development activity can be launched.

The government seems to have woken up a little late in the day. The charge that foreign funded NGOs are behind the agitation in Kudankulam is hard to believe since it has been going on for several months now. The government is unable to assure the local people about the safety aspects of the plant. All it has done is send panels and more panels, adding to the confusion.
