Kudankulam debate

November 22, 2011 12:32 am | Updated 12:32 am IST

The agitation against the commissioning of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant is heading to a point of no return. Scientists issuing statements for and against the plant, local people organising fasts for the closure of the plant, and the government's apathy towards them are confusing the common man who has no knowledge of the issue.

Since the Fukushima nuclear disaster, proponents of nuclear energy are trying to defend their plants based on futuristic, supposedly new, passive cooling systems. However that is mostly propaganda aimed at selling the unsellable. Operational safety is no longer the main issue. The real problem is the huge worldwide accumulation of spent fuel with very long decay rates, and no place to store it safely for eternity.
