The aftermath and response to the calamity that struck Chennai (Editorial, Nov.20) highlights the sorry state of the city and the State of Tamil Nadu as a whole when it comes to urban planning. This is true of our other metros as well. The word “development” now takes place at the cost of proper planning and implementation. The near submergence of large parts of Chennai has only exposed corruption, an appropriation of natural wealth, improper urban planning and a constricted bureaucracy. The list can go on.
