Hearkening back

I don’t understand why the government is obsessed with the past (“Who is stopping us from amending history, asks Amit Shah”, October 18). It has been given a mandate to run the country, to set it on the right path, to plan for the future. The economy is in the doldrums. The youth are anxiously waiting for promises to be kept. Only a road map to move forward will help the government and the people, not brooding about history books.

Veer Savarkar is known as the Father of Hindutva. He was also a social reformer. But his role as a freedom fighter was only incidental. His contribution to the attainment of freedom was often clouded by his radical postures. He openly boycotted the Quit India movement. His agenda did not complement the efforts of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and even Sardar Patel. Eulogising Savarkar may please the Hindutva brigade. But in the process, undermining the role of leaders who gave their sweat and blood for independence is unacceptable. You can rewrite history, but you cannot erase it.
