As a student, I once wrote to Khushwant Singh asking him if he could send me a copy of his book, A Train to Pakistan. I didn’t think he would bother to reply. A month later, the postman brought home a parcel. I opened it to find a copy of the book signed by the author with his greetings. Unfortunately, I lost the book to one of the stealthy borrowers of my books.

Though born in Pakistan, he was a true Indian to the end. His run as the Editor of The Illustrated Weekly of India was memorable, making it “a noisy, rumbustious, jet-propelled vehicle of information, controversy and amusement.”

Khushwant Singh led a rich life immersed in literature. A kind-hearted satirist, he made our lives ever so much richer by his literary contributions.
