While it is true that the young girl who was molested in Guwahati underwent trauma, we must remember that she got involved in a brawl with drunken men right in front of a bar, where there is every possibility of more drunkards joining the fray.
You can’t throw all caution to the winds and later blame the police. The same thing would have happened to a man under similar circumstances but would have gone unnoticed.

The people of the northeast recently protested in Delhi against the discrimination they face at the hands of others. How safe is their own region? Assam was once an example of an egalitarian society. But the cosmopolitan culture has finally taken its toll.

The Guhawati incident is one among the many incidents which reiterate that women are not safe in India and that Indian males are most content playing passive onlookers when women are in trouble. Women are molested in pubs, trains and buses.
The young girl in Guwahati may get justice since her case has garnered media attention. But can one videotape the many cases of molestation that take place every day across the length and breadth of our country? How can we ensure that justice is speedily delivered to the countless nameless women who have faced the trauma and agony of such incidents? It is time society, more importantly men, played a more proactive role in ensuring the safety of women.
