Get serious

The editorial “Painting fangs on a lamb” (Feb. 15) is a timely warning on our failings on the anti-terror front. What makes Monday's blast in New Delhi all the more audacious is the venue — a VVIP area. The state of affairs not only exposes our vulnerability but also establishes that terror in India is aided and abetted by international agencies. One hopes the government will strengthen its resolve to fight and uproot this menace.

The attack on the Israeli diplomat's car in the close vicinity of the Prime Minister's residence, of which we still do not have a detailed account, bears a sad testimony to our poor state of preparedness to fight terror. Today, terrorists are using the latest technology to strike with impunity.

We must, therefore, initiate all possible preventive measures to defeat their nefarious designs. The editorial advice is timely.

The hard-hitting editorial has exposed the failure of our intelligence network and lack of emergency response infrastructure.

It has also done well to point out to the speculative nature of the electronic media. With many television news channels blatantly portraying the happenings more as entertainment than news, I had to resort to the radio to catch up with factual news.

The root cause of the problem appears to be the common man's chalta hai attitude which continues to influence him even after he wears the police uniform.

Also, a lot of damage has been done to the police forces, thanks to their poor and careless portrayal in films. It makes people laugh and it subconsciously corrodes their attitude towards the important institution. Another important profession which has suffered a similar fate is teaching.

Following the attack in New Delhi, suspected to be the handiwork of Iran-backed Hezbollah, India is at a crossroads with respect to its relationship with Islamic countries and Israel. It might be tempting to align with Iran, considering that nearly 10 per cent of our oil requirements are met by it. However, we should not lose sight of the fact that Iran's nuclear ambitions have already pitted the rest of the world against it. India is bound to gain a lot, including curbing terrorism, by supporting Israel.

Arun Chandra,

Mumbai

Non-state actors have used India as the theatre of terrorist activities against Israel. This amply demonstrates that India has become vulnerable for non-state actors to settle their political scores with their ‘enemies.'

New Delhi's ‘go slow' attitude in punishing terrorists even after nabbing them has emboldened them to strike at will in India.
