Gender inequality

September 27, 2011 12:34 am | Updated 12:34 am IST

It was stunning to read that the maternal mortality in India is almost six times the rate in Sri Lanka (“Shaming numbers,” editorial, Sept. 26). That economic growth, better women's education and more employment opportunities for women have not addressed gender inequality is disturbing. In India, women are revered and it is sad this is happening.

It is always difficult to educate the educated. More often, the better-off and educated classes resort to foeticide. The truth behind this sad story is the impossibility of investment return from girls. If social custom changes into making even girls responsible for parental care and sibling care, this problem will disappear from India.
