Food justice

The article “From food security to food justice” by Ananya Mukherjee (Feb. 1) was inspirational. I too have seen the work done by Kudumbashree units in Kerala as some of my aunts are members of ‘Ayalkoottam,' a neighbourhood group (NHG). The women engage in cashew-nut processing, garbage removal and take up the responsibility of preparing ‘Sadya' (banquets) for marriages in the countryside. The mission gives them an opportunity to work and earn in a homely environment, and transform themselves from passive home-makers to active leaders.

G. Sarath,

Ernakulam

I was a national coordinator for an international poverty alleviation project in coconut growing communities in the Central Plantation Crops Research Institute, Kasaragod, for three years.

Thanks to Kudumbashree, many women had undergone training in various income generating technologies like vegetable cultivation, vermi composting, and adding value-added skills in coconut plantations. This empowered them to not only enhance production and process various products and market them but also add income to their families. Many success stories have been documented by the institute.
