Financing elections

The issue is not about the money being spent upon advertisements and on reaching the voters (“Limited finance limits democracy,” Oct.12). The bigger issue is in money being spent on the distribution of drugs, alcohol, and other freebees to the voters. Also the misuse of official State machinery especially during local elections like panchayat and municipal corporations and voter education need attention.

The article has rightly focused on guarded socialist mindset of policy makers. The premise that “rich cannot represent the poor” is false as India itself has had many affluent leaders such as like Jawaharlal Nehru and Dadabhai Naoroji whose will to serve society cannot be questioned. Also, the rules do not ensure that people who spend less on campaigns can be better politicians.
