Ethics, not law

October 26, 2015 02:23 am | Updated 02:23 am IST

The recent incidences of sexual abuse of minor girls by adolescents (“Two minor girls raped in Delhi,” and “ >Three-year old raped by juvenile in Gurgaon ,” Oct.23) and Arvind Kejriwal’s pitch for a reduction in age of juveniles call for greater introspection in our society. It is obvious that our society is changing but its development is not keeping pace with our economic growth.

Our blind imitation of the West and our ossified attitudes have created a wide gap between the ideal and the real. It is difficult to change such attitudes by just changing the law. It is our education system which needs to be made more liberal to impart better values. It is currently more focused on science and technology and less on values and ethics.
