The article, “When the unelected set the agenda” (Feb.22), a deeply thought-provoking one, dealt with a complex issue by linking it to the actions of the unelected. A large segment of the political leadership across the country appears to look towards mobilising voter support through appeasement. In many instances, the act of “jumping red lights” is being sponsored by our elected governments and representatives. In several cases it’s being attributed to the widening economic gap in society. Let’s hope that it’s a passing phenomenon.

The writer seems to be unaware of the fact that Indian society never cherished the individual functioning as an autonomous unit. Celebrating individual autonomy is the core belief of liberalism and not of a multicultural society such as India’s. So, the question of “slowly losing our autonomy” is inconsistent. Also, the attacks on individual autonomy are natural outcomes of a multicultural stance. Individualism and collectivism cannot coexist in such a society.
