EC on cash transfer

December 04, 2012 12:46 am | Updated 12:46 am IST

The Election Commission has done well to ask the UPA government to submit a report on the direct cash transfer scheme following the BJP’s complaint about the timing of the announcement. The scheme is a pure and simple election gimmick to garner the votes of the vulnerable sections. It does not require political sagacity to see through the ruse of the Congress.

It has become a practice for the Congress to announce special schemes on the eve of every election and for the Election Commission to ask for an explanation. If the Commission is serious about punishing a party for violating the Election Rules, it should bar the party from contesting the elections.
