The latest CAG reports, on Air India and the KG basin violations (Sept. 9), reveal more skeletons crammed in the UPA cupboard. It is shocking that the UPA government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, a renowned economist, and ably supported by a group of other renowned economists, has failed to intervene in decisions made by various ministries, evidently favouring corporates, and thereby inflicting heavy loses on the exchequer. The sorry state of the national carrier is a case in point. It is strange that then Civil Aviation Minister, Praful Patel, has not considered the Air India issue to be serious.

One must be happy that we have the Comptroller and Auditor-General of India. On Air India, the CAG has well summarised the prescription for its good health. But will these observations be taken seriously by the government and action initiated against the people responsible for the lapses?

In the guise of liberalisation and globalisation, the government has been going out of its way to aid foreign and Indian capitalists. The CAG reports are a pointer.
