Auditing cancer care

Cancer treatment can result in a heavy hospital expenditure beginning from modern investigations to costly drugs. Even medical insurance does not cover fully this expenditure. One can only imagine the plight of poor patients, especially when the focus seems to be on survivors who are better off. Medical insurance companies should come out with comprehensive policies that are within the reach of poor and middle class patients. More government cancer hospitals should be opened. There has to be a political will behind this (Page 1, “India’s cancer care facilities ‘highly inadequate’,” November 13).
