The purpose of the strike by the faculty members of the Indian Institutes of Technology is to draw attention to the problems faced by them and it should be noted that it is not a lightning strike and classes are not at all disrupted. Nor is anybody out on the streets destroying property. Will our honourable Minister resolve the issue?

The IIT teachers should have explored all negotiating options before going on strike. While their grievances may be legitimate, the symbolic message the hunger strike conveys does not evoke sympathy for the fighting faculty.

HRD Minister Kapil Sibal’s offer of more autonomy to the premier institutions (Sept. 24) is a step forward. The protesting teachers should take the challenge graciously. It is unfortunate that the elite too resort to coercive tactics instead of joining in a meaningful dialogue with the government.
