Shehrbano Taseer's article, “My father died for Pakistan” (Op-Ed, Jan.11), was a thought-provoking reflection on the setbacks that her father, Pakistan's Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, suffered before he was assassinated by his own guard on January 4. To curb bloodletting and to foster Muhammad Ali Jinnah's vision of a tolerant Pakistan, the much misused blasphemy law needs to be abolished or amended suitably.

Right-wing talk is a major part of Indian political and public life. But recent incidents prove that in Pakistan, right-wing extremism has become the basis of everyday functioning, even in government departments. By killing Mr. Taseer, Mumtaz Qadri has not silenced the voice of a secular Pakistan, but has awoken a movement that is willing to fight for the freedom of speech.
