Rise of a star

The fact that MGR, one of India’s most charismatic leaders, lives beyond his time can be attributed to what he did with head and heart (“The prince of populism”, Jan.17). His reign in Tamil Nadu was a watershed in the State’s politics where people reposed full faith in his philanthropic disposition. He also maintained an excellent relationship with the Central government which stood him in good stead. He was a man of the masses. The way he popularised the noon meal scheme was a master stroke.

The huge success story of MGR was based not just on charisma. He realised, through his films, that he had to be primarily a hero who ensured that good prevailed over bad. While his films had strong social messages boosting his image, the most important part of this was his unquestionable identity among the poor. To them, he was a larger-than-life demigod. His welfare measures ensured this.
