Poor common man

The UPA government has dealt a dual blow to the people by hiking the price of petrol twice in quick succession, the latest by Rs. 2.54 a litre. The justification that the global price is the main reason for the hike and that petrol is the “rich man's fuel” will not do. It is only a matter of time before diesel goes the petrol way.

Travelling by bullock cart may be the only way to beat the fuel price rise. Beyond issuing token protests, no party appears to show any concern for the impact of the price rise on people's lives.

Has anyone thought of the impact of the fuel price hike on the daily wage earners? Does the surge in the prices make farmers rich? Where does all the money go?

G.P. Navin Kumar,Thiruvallur

While one section of the political class says we do not have an effective price control mechanism, another says increasing prices are an index of prosperity. A leader does not know the difference between inflation and the artificial rigging of prices. Another leader says the arithmetic of the CAG is all wrong. One more says it is very difficult to work within the compulsions of coalition politics while the last counsels patience saying the onion prices will come down soon. Just where is governance?
