On mental health

January 17, 2017 01:48 am | Updated 01:48 am IST

With the passing of the Mental Health Care Bill, 2013, last year in the Rajya Sabha, the country has ushered in a new era of looking at mental disorders more holistically. However, there still exists a vast arena not covered by both the government and the common man when it comes to addressing mental health-care issues. The government should focus on increasing accessibility to psychiatric help for its own employees across the country, if one considers the cases of jawans involved in shootouts. This should include steps to be taken in the direction of normalisation of the process, which still remains taboo. The deployment of psychologists, counsellors, and compulsory visitation for government employees should be top priority of policy.
