Maran's exit

The UPA government's inaction on the 2G scam and the resignation of Union Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran were both due to the pressure of circumstances (editorial, July 8). Even in the past, a similar strategy of inaction was adopted by the same dispensation though there was mounting evidence of corruption in a number of areas. The attitude of the Prime Minister needs to be explained to the public.

Those uncovering the never-ending trail in the 2G scam seem to forget that the Prime Minister is the first among equals and that for any acts of omission or commission by his team, he is also equally responsible. The smokescreen of Dr. Singh being personally above reproach every time a scam, scandal, case of corruption or controversy erupts cannot be used all the time.

Now that Mr. Maran has resigned, the government must uncover the scam in complete detail. There does not seem to be any more reason to use the excuse of coalition compulsions. The government should show that it is determined to fight corruption.
