Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani’s reported statement that Pakistan cannot guarantee that there will be no Mumbai-like attacks on the Indian soil again (Jan. 23) may be unfortunate but it reflects the true state of affairs in Pakistan.
U.S. Defence Secretary Robert Gates not only swallowed the snub but also ended up promising drone aircraft to Pakistan to help fight the war on terror. No wonder Islamabad is able to twirl Washington around its fingers.

Mr. Gilani’s argument that Pakistan cannot provide any guarantee against 26/11-type attacks on Indian soil when it is facing similar attacks almost every other day cannot be taken at face value. True, the number of suicide attacks in Pakistan has increased in the last two years and many innocent people have been killed. But Pakistan continues to host anti-India terror outfits such as the Lashkar-e-Taiba and the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen. An American-Pakistan watcher rightly said some time ago that Pakistan cannot keep a viper in its bosom and hope that it will not bite. Islamabad should sever all connections with all types of terrorists and believe that India and Pakistan can co-exist.
