While there is no second opinion that the action of T.J. Joseph, a professor at Muvattupuzha, Kerala, in setting a question paper offending the sentiments of Muslims was wrong, the attack on the him by activists of the Popular Front of India, chopping off his palm is highly condemnable. The professor has been booked under the law for causing communal hatred and the college has suspended him for a year. Religious fanatics cannot be allowed to take the law into their own hands.

The attack on Professor Joseph was one of the most gruesome incidents Kerala has witnessed in recent times. He was already under suspension for the flawed question paper he had set and investigation is in progress. No religion or ideology sanctions such a barbaric act. I am still at a loss to understand what the perpetrators were trying to prove.

It is sad to note that in the 21st century, a professor can have his palm chopped off for setting a question paper that hurt the religious sentiments of a few. Whether the professor set the question paper with an ulterior motive should be probed and all those involved in the attack should be punished.
