This refers to the editorial “The show does go on” (Feb. 15). The successful screening of My Name Is Khan in the multiplexes and theatres of Maharashtra is a victory for the Bollywood industry and the people who defied the Shiv Sena’s threats and turned out in large numbers to watch the film. The politics of language and regional chauvinism the Sena practises is against democracy and the Constitution, and ought to be defeated.

Mumbaikars heaved a sigh of relief as Chief Minister Ashok Chavan not only called the Shiv Sena supremo’s bluff but also established that it is the writ of the State government, not Bal Thackeray’s, that runs in Mumbai. Dissent and disagreement are, no doubt, essential ingredients of democracy. But taking the law into one’s own hands is not permissible.
