Tamil Nadu has been sailing through a stormy period with most of us watching helplessly as V.K. Sasikala, a close personal aide of Jayalalithaa, has moved on to become the AIADMK’s general secretary (“Transfer of loyalty”, Jan.13). Most of us do not know what role she played in politics or whether she has solutions to Tamil Nadu’s problems. A situation where there has been no regard for the consensus of the people or even its party cadres is unfortunate.

Ms. Sasikala, who has pledged to follow in the footsteps of Jayalalithaa to ensure discipline and unity in the AIADMK party, must avoid assuming the role of Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. One would expect that Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam is given enough time to function before he is judged. The government will lose its credibility if his constitutional position as Chief Minister is continually challenged by party sycophants who are keen to curry favour with Ms. Sasikala who has held no position in the party or public life. With a shroud of secrecy surrounding Jayalalithaa’s medical treatment and the disproportionate assets case hanging like a sword of Damocles over her head, Ms. Sasikala would be well advised not to assume an additional role as chief minister.
