Her tall standing in the field, her rich experience as a performing artiste, and her ability to view things from a secular and global perspective – all these should keep her in good stead in handling her new job.

The wait was worth. And, the Central Government can really be proud of this one selection. The appointment of Priyadarsini Govind as the Director of Kalakshetra has indeed come as a surprise. Nevertheless, it is a pleasant and welcome one at that.

Much water has flown under the bridge since Leela Samson quit the post of Director in August 2012 after the Madras High Court set aside the Centre’s decision to reinstate her as Director. Earlier, Leela Samson gave up the job only to subsequently take back her resignation, facilitating the Central Government to reinsert her as Director. This was, however, challenged by a section within Kalakshetra, resulting in the High Court order.

With the appointment of Priyadarsini Govind, things should return to normal at this 77-year-old venerable institution. She will, perhaps, be the first outsider to hold the director position at this institution.

Win-win situation

And, she is also the youngest to be elevated to that slot. This should prove a big advantage for her. For, she does not come in with any baggage which could be the case with previous directors who had come from within. This is a huge plus for Priyadarsini to start her innings on a clean slate without prejudice or favour. Her `outsider’ tag and age could indeed help her to bring in fresh perspective to this historic institution. Steeped in traditions, she could, at the same time, be counted upon to protect the hallowed tradition of this great institute. Her tall standing in the field, her rich experience as a performing artiste, and her ability to view things from a secular and global perspective – all these should keep her in good stead in handling her new assignment, which is full of challenges. Though a busy artiste, the professional in her should have no difficulty in apportioning enough time and space to her new job at Kalakshetra
