Assam draft NRC: Supreme Court orders resumption of filing of claims, objections by 40 lakh left-out people

The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the resumption of filing of claims and objections by around 40 lakh people who were left out in the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) of  Assam.

A Bench, comprising Justices Ranjan Gogoi amd R.F. Nariman, said the process would commence on September 25 and remain open for the next 60 days.

In Hyderabad, father hacks daughter, son-in-law in public for inter-caste marriage

In the second such incident in the last few days, a man hacked and injured his daughter and son-in-law on Erragadda main road in  Hyderabad  on Wednesday afternoon. The gruesome incident, coming close on the heels of the killing of a Dalit youth Pranay in Miryalaguda, sent shock waves through the city.  Pranay was hacked to death  by a hired killer for marrying an upper caste girl.

The Islamabad High Court suspended the jail sentences of former  Pakistan  Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter and son-in-law in a corruption case, according to media reports.

The Union Cabinet cleared an ordinance to make instant triple talaq a criminal offence. However, the amended triple talaq bill provides for additional safeguards, including a provision for bail to an accused before the start of the trial.

Bishop Franco Mulakkal interrogated by Kerala police in nun rape case

The Kerala police interrogated Franco Mulakkal, Catholic bishop of the Syrian Malabar Church, in the nun rape case. The bishop, who was heading the diocese in Jalandhar, arrived in Kochi on Tuesday evening and left for Thrissur for the night. Around 11 a.m on Wednesday, he reached the Crime Branch office at Tripunithura in a car along with his counsel and another priest.
