SC rejects review pleas of Delhi gang rape convicts against death sentence

The  Supreme Court  on Monday rejected the petitions filed by the 2012 Delhi gang rape convicts to review the death penalty awarded to them. The paramedic student was gang-raped on the intervening night of December 16-17, 2012 inside a moving bus in South Delhi. She died on December 29, 2012 at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.

Supreme Court favours live-streaming of court proceedings

Supreme Court  Bench, led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, on Monday favoured live-streaming of court proceedings. The Bench asked Attorney General K.K. Venugopal, who also agreed with the prospects of airing court proceedings for global viewing, to make his submissions on the issue on July 23, the next date of hearing.

Six universities including Jio Institute to be ‘institutions of eminence’

Three private universities - BITS (Pilani), Manipal Academy of Higher Education and Jio Institute - were awarded the status of ‘institutions of eminence’ by the Centre on Monday. Government institutions such as the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, and the Indian Institutes of Technology in Mumbai and Delhi were also awarded the status.

Samsung India aims to double annual mobile production capacity by 2020

Gangster Munna Bajrangi shot dead inside U.P. jail

Gangster Prem Prakash Singh alias Munna Bajrangi was shot dead inside the Baghpat district jail in  Uttar Pradesh  early on Monday. Following the incident, the State government has suspended the Jailor, Deputy Jailor, Warden and Head Warden and ordered a judicial inquiry.

Fish samples in Chennai test positive for formalin

As many as 11 out of 30 samples of fish species purchased from Chinthadripet and Kasimedu, the two major fish markets in  Chennai,  on two different days, have tested positive for formalin, a cancer-inducing chemical used illegally to preserve fish. The fish were tested by scientists of the Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University exclusively for The Hindu .

NCLT dismisses Cyrus Mistry’s plea against removal as Tata Sons chairman

Seven new wasp species discovered in the Amazon forests

The Amazon rainforests continue to throw up surprises, and this time it’s a slightly scary one. An international team of researchers have discovered seven new wasp species belonging to the genus Clistopyga from Peru, Venezuela and Colombia. A recent report published in  Zootaxa  describes their morphology, such as colouration, wing size and other distinct features.
