Modi says he had an ‘excellent’ meeting with Abhijit Banerjee

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said he had an “excellent” meeting with Economics Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee on October 22. “Excellent meeting with Nobel Laureate Abhijit Banerjee. His passion towards human empowerment is clearly visible. We had a healthy and extensive interaction on various subjects. India is proud of his accomplishments. Wishing him the very best for his future endeavours,” Mr. Modi said in his official Twitter handle.

Benjamin Netanyahu gave up his effort to form a new government on Monday after failing to secure a majority coalition, creating an opportunity for centrist rival Benny Gantz to replace Israel's longest serving Prime Minister. Netanyahu, who heads the right-wing Likud party, said he had been unable to form a government following an election in September, and was returning the mandate back to Israel's President Reuven Rivlin.

IMD withdraws red alert for Kerala

The India Meteorological Department on October 22 morning withdrew the red and orange category rainfall alerts issued for Kerala. An orange alert is in place for Idukki for October 22 indicating the possibility of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, the IMD said in a modified weather advisory issued at 10 a.m. Isolated heavy rainfall is also likely in Pathanamthitta, Malappura.

Hover-taxi whizzes over Singapore, firm eyes Asian push

A drone-like flying taxi whirred over Singapore’s waterfront on October 22, with the firm behind the test hoping the aircraft will revolutionise travel in traffic-choked Asian cities. The 18 propeller vehicle, developed by German firm Volocopter and with a pilot onboard during the test flight, took off from a promontory and flew for about two minutes and 30 seconds around the Marina Bay district.
