ECI curtails West Bengal campaigning after Kolkata violence

The Election Commission on Wednesday ordered campaigning in nine West Bengal constituencies to end at 10 PM on Thursday night, a day before its scheduled deadline, in the wake of violence between BJP and TMC workers in Kolkata.

Pakistan airspace to remain shut for Indian flights till May 30

Pakistan on May 15 decided not to lift its airspace ban for Indian flights till May 30, as Islamabad is awaiting the outcome of the Lok Sabha polls in India. Pakistan fully closed its airspace after an Indian Air Force strike on a Jaish-e-Mohammed terror camp in Balakot on February 26. However, Pakistan opened its airspace for all flights except for New Delhi, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur on March 27.

3-yr-old rape: J&K High Court seeks police report by May 17

Amid unrelenting street protests in the Kashmir Valley, especially by students, against the rape of a three-year-old, the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir on Wednesday took  suo moto  cognisance of the case. Chief Justice Gitta Mittal directed the Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, “to submit a status report on Friday”.

US orders non-emergency embassy staff to leave Iraq

The United States on Wednesday ordered all non-emergency staff to leave its embassy in Baghdad and consulate in Arbil, as tensions mount between the United States and Iraq’s neighbour Iran. Washington has ramped up pressure on Tehran in recent days, accusing Iran of planning “imminent” attacks in the region, and bolstering the American military presence in the Gulf.
