Woman beaten up, paraded naked in Bihar

A woman was beaten up and paraded naked by a violent mob in Bhojpur district of Bihar on Monday, on suspicion that she was involved in the murder of a local youth.

The mob vandalised shops and houses and set vehicles on fire in Bihiya, 20 km from the district headquarters of Ara.

The body of 19-year-old Bimlesh Sao of Damodarpur village was found near the railway track on Monday morning.

Villagers who gathered suspected that he was killed by those living in a red-light area nearby. They then went on the rampage, setting shops, houses and vehicles on fire. They dragged a woman out on the street, ripped off her clothes and paraded her naked, all the while kicking and slapping her.

Police open fire

“The police had to open fire in the air to disperse the mob and rescue the woman...we’re making raids to arrest more people identified in the video of the incident,” said Bhojpur Superintendent of Police Awakash Kumar.

Fifteen persons have been arrested in the case, said S.K. Singhal, ADGP (headquarters) in Patna.

“Eight policemen, including officer-in-charge of Bihiya police station, have been suspended for dereliction of duty.” The woman was taken to a local hospital under police protection. Her condition is said to be stable.

The National Commission for women took suo motu cognizance of the case and has asked the Bihar DGP K.S. Dwivedi about the action being taken.

Leader of the Opposition Tejaswi Yadav slammed Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and tweeted: “Nitish Ji, with folded hands I request you to fix law and order and ensure women safety and security. Please [sic.]”. JD(U) leader and party spokesperson Neeraj Kumar said: “Law is taking its course and nobody found involved in the incident will be spared.”
